Pool cover on grass

July 9th, 2015 by Tuff Turf Molebusters

Spreading a solar cover for a swimming pool on the lawn can burn the grass in a very short time when it is sunny and hot.  Covers should be cleaned on the driveway to prevent this from happening.

Pure Michigan

We found this burn in a lawn at the entrance to a subdivision.  Somebody has some artistic talent to burn a spot in the shape of Michigan.

Protecting your property from Mosquitoes

June 11th, 2015 by Tuff Turf Molebusters

Pyrethrins are a class of natural insecticides produced from dried chrysanthemum blooms.   Pyrethrins work by penetrating the nervous system of insects. Small doses of pyrethrin are very effective against insects with exoskeletons. Humans and animals do not have exoskeletons, so it does not affect nervous systems the same. Pyrethrins are often used in pet shampoos to kill fleas and ticks. Apply a pyrethrin based product as a light spray in shady areas where mosquitoes land, such as in bushes, mulch or under decks. The residual will typically last about a month and kill insects that pass through it or land on it. In addition to spraying, you can protect your yard from mosquitoes by:

  • Eliminating standing water on your property. Check your gutters, drains, flowerpots, and even bird baths.  Anywhere water stands is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • Use insect repellent when you are going to be outside (especially true from dusk until dawn when mosquitoes are most active.)  Repellents that include DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are the most effective.
  • Wear light, long sleeve shirts and pants when you are going to be outside for an extended amount of time (especially from dusk until dawn.)  Mosquitoes are drawn to heat and carbon dioxide (which is why it is important to wear lighter clothing so your heat signature isn’t too great.)
  • Use air conditioning or make sure there are screens on all doors and windows (and they are in good repair) to keep mosquitoes from entering the home.

Finding pyrethrin products in the hardware store is easy. Finding the time to apply them is the challenge. That is why many of our customers rely on the Mosquito Abatement program.  Our program is very effective and allows our clients to enjoy being outside without being eaten alive.

Summer Sprinkling in Michigan

June 11th, 2015 by Tuff Turf Molebusters

When the temperatures are above 70 degrees, cool season grass needs to be watered once a day.  When the temperatures are above 80 degrees, cool season grass needs to be watered twice a day.  We recommend watering at 3:00 AM and then again during the heat of the day.  We have heard the argument against watering during the heat of the day because it can burn the lawn.  This is only true if you water for 1 – 2 minutes per zone with rotor heads because you are barely getting the grass wet and the water droplets act as a magnifying lens.  If you run the sprinklers for at least 10 minutes per zone with rotor heads and 3 minutes per zone of pop up heads you will cool off the lawn and give it the water it needs.

I have also hear the argument about watering less frequently, but for a longer period to make the roots go deeper.  The problem with this philosophy is that it ignores the biology of our grass.  Cool season grass has shorter roots when the temperature warms up.  You cannot change the biology of the grass.  Roots are getting shorter now and no amount of water will make them grow deeper.  Watering deep can stress out the lawn more because of the extreme variances between too wet and too dry.  To relate this to a human, if you are running a marathon race on an 85 degree day, would you drink 2 gallons of water the day before the race and then not drink for 2 more days because you already had enough water for the week?  You would dehydrate at the same rate if you did not drink before, during, and after the race.

Correction to our mole count

May 19th, 2015 by Tuff Turf Molebusters

We made a mistake and need to learn to count.   We have only trapped 19,419 moles.  We expect to hit the 20,000 moles by Independence Day.

We have now trapped over 20,000 moles

May 6th, 2015 by Tuff Turf Molebusters

On Tuesday we trapped mole number 20,000.  It looked just like the other 19,999 other ones.  Ten years ago we started counting the moles we trapped once we realized we were catching over 500 in a year.  We have trapped over 600 moles in the last 6 weeks!
